"We don't serve Pepsi products..."

Pepsi is also pinning its hope on the launch across America on March 26th of Pepsi Next, a new soda sweetened with both high-fructose syrup and artificial sweeteners which has 60% less sugar than classic Pepsi. Angelique Krembs of Pepsi says the new drink is aimed at consumers who are keen to imbibe less sugar with their cola but dislike the taste of diet drinks. She splits this mostly male group in two: “dualists”, who switch between regular and diet (and sometimes mix the two), and “resistants”, who never touch either.

Just as Burger King has fallen from grace in the fast food industry, Pepsi has been getting decimated by Coca-Cola on all fronts in the beverage industry.

I'm not sure what's funnier: the fact that Pepsi's CEO aims to transform its product line to healthier items (yeah right!!!), OR the fact that is considering working for the World Bank to better serve humanity...

I find the soft drink kings moving into other beverages (Coca-Cola : Minute Maid :: Pepsi : Tropicana) kind of odd too. I know to this day I will never purchase Minute Maid, not because it's concentrated junk, but because the image of Coca-Cola being in charge of my orange juice just doesn't sit well with me.

What do you guys think -- has the health-conscious consumer made it necessary for these companies to follow new avenues? Should people be ditching their Pepsi shares?

I have to admit, Pepsi's bottles and cans being blue does make it more aesthetically pleasing.

99.9% of the world has no clue that Coke owns Minute Maid. And besides that, it's just a distribution play anyway -- they own the channel, so it's all about pushing through additional branded products for more revenues with higher incremental margins.

No need to ditch shares, the companies are just being proactive. There are very mild health-related headwinds for soft drinks, but it's not like it's going to go over a cliff.
