Controversial

I know this is probably not a serious topic but you are right that most violent crime is committed by men and many men like guns.  Plenty of guys on this site enjoy shooting guns. Some men on WSO hunt while other guys buy guns for self defense while others like to collect guns as a hobby.  With that said, guys on WSO are not likely to engage in a mass shooting (I know the statistics for mass shootings) . The issue is of course, what should we do about the dangerous men and their guns.  I think we all know that nothing is going to be done about it, which is very unfortunate.  It seems like such a simple issue to me.  Guns have made our society so much less safe.  There is no simple regulation that could be passed that would stop murder via firearms and mass shootings.  The only answer is limit their use.  The average person should not be allowed to own a gun.  An individual should have to justify the need to have a firearm.

Not going to Happen.  Statistically guns don't make our society so much less safe. YOu are right, you are not going to take 300mm guns from your population. We live in a country that give us a fundamental right from government overreach by saying that our use of firearms should not be restricted, that will never be overturned.

I know the language that is used to justify gun ownership and one of the phrases was written hundreds of years ago when government over reach was an issue.  It is not an issue today.  Lots of things have changed over the past 250 years and our approach towards owning firearms should change as well.

I'm sorry, you don't think government overreach is an issue today?  We have the IRS, we have government withholding of taxes, we have civil forfeiture, we have licenses for any sort of business endeavor.  We have the CIA, the NSA, who wiretaps our phones and conversations, can access our personaly computers without a warrant, after the Patriot ACT. AND YOU THINK WE DONT HAVE GOVERNMENT OVERREACH, OR LESS THAN EXISTED IN the 1800s?!!

Where do you get your drugs?

How was government overreach an issue in the 1700s when the government literally could not effectively tax people beyond a 50km radius of the capital because:

1. They couldn't track down people who needed to pay taxes

2. They didn't even know if some of their citizens existed

3. When a group of armed men who don't want to pay taxes see a lone tax collector on a horse, things tend to not end well

4. They were too busy sending all of their government personnel to fight against the British, Canadians, Mexicans, Spanish or each other every 2 years

Guns are fundamentally part of the American DNA from the Bill of Rights. We've banned auto weapons, think we've banned bump stocks though the courts will strike that down most likely. Doubt we'll ever be able to ban semi-autos and we will never be able to ban things like pistols.

There are a lot of things that were in the US DNA that are no longer part of our system.  For example, slavery was a common practice at one time.  I am not a historian nor was I history major but I would think that a substantial percentage of the US was opposed to abolishing slavery.  If companies do not adapt to changing times, their products become obsolete.  It is time for the US to adapt to the current situation.

I partially blame the dems on this issue.  Dems do not have the courage to take a stronger stance on guns.

Justify a need?

we are less than 2 years away from police pulling out of cities during mass violent protests and leaving residents to protect themselves on their own from criminals

we are still grappling with the fallout of authoritarian govt policy regarding Covid. Thank god we have guns and a backbone , because we stopped the mess much quicker than other western nations

and lastly, it’s a constitutional right. If that’s on the chopping block then they all are

the above is more than enough reason to justify the mass ownership of guns.
