I had an interview in Silicon Alley for a CFO position with a tech startup and wore a suit and the CEO conducting the interview was like - ‘why are you dressed so formal’ - he was in jeans and a t-shirt. I said - ‘what - would you prefer I wore jeans and my Vans half cabs with yellow laces?’ He was like ‘yeah that would have been much better.’
He never told me to dress informal though. I didn’t get the position. You live you learn. Sometimes going casual makes a proper statement if it’s appropriate.
