What are your tips on interviewing when target locations are 250-700 miles away?

I can overnight drives to interviews and just call in sick on the day of the interview, but I can probably only pull that off once or twice. Besides, I really can't see myself driving more than 550 miles at a time (9-11hrs) and being fresh for an interview. I only have 4 vacation days to take. If I could line up my interviews I could probably take unpaid time off and play it off as an extended vacation but chances of lining things up are slim.

I need some outside the box strats here.
