What do you wear in your business Zoom meetings?

I found out today I have to attend 6+ Zoom meetings in a week with various teams and portfolio companies. I've never really done this Zoom thing, I'm just used to conference calls. What do you usually wear? I think I might just put on a collared shirt to look nice? Shorts obviously.

Luckily I have a badass painting behind me in my office that looks good on camera.

In that case, you can ditch the ascot. You're over thinking this. Wear a button up white shirt to button undone depending on formality. You can wear a blue blazer, but not too dark. THe camera distortion might make it look black, and you don't need the fashion police judging you on it.

You don’t like croissants? On a serious note, I never turn my camera on, even when talking with my PE overlords. My CEO turns his on when he’s talking and is in a polo at most.

Almost everyone is just polo’d up - never see a suit unless it’s an in person meeting with a lot of people and I’m dialing in on Teams.

Neat hair and a polo should be good enough. Also make sure not to look like you just woke up - it’s obvious when someone wakes up a minute before the meeting and has to “take a minute to get settled in”.

Depends who you are talking to. If it's higher up people, go for the suit and tie. Wear black pants as well. You don't want to be the guy that accidentally stands up for something and...

It seems a bit overkill, but honestly dressing up nice for guys takes very little time anyways - just take the extra few minutes to dress like it was an office meeting.

What kind of advice is this? I can’t remember, are you a college student or have you graduated already?

First off, the suit for higher ups makes no sense. Why? Just because they’re higher up? Secondly, why black pants? Are you implying to wear a black suit?

Since we have to be courteous now or else our messages will be removed, this is me asking politely why you are recommending what you are.

Graduated.

 Just because they're higher up?

Yes. Was involved in some projects that had high visibility and some of the people in attendance were high up in the hierarchy. Only for that case did I ever wear a suit and tie. Usually I will just wear a dress shirt (no tie, unbuttoned collar) and maybe some slacks for regular team meetings. There are definitely people who go more casual than that but it definitely becomes a gray area at some point. This is of course when video is actually used. Most of the time it's  not.

Secondly, why black pants?

I just happen to have those from a while back so I use them for this purpose. The color isn't significant (I have other colors as well). I'm not too particular on the pant color for virtual meetings, but I just make sure the pant is of reasonable quality. It would look a little silly to wear a navy suit and have black dress pants but it's nothing like accidentally standing up in pajamas or boxers

I have never owned a black suit in my life.  I do not think they are ever very stylish.

So it’s out for the meeting but no one can see it? Sounds pretty alpha.

Done a lot of Zoom/Teams meetings over the past 2-3 years due to COVID. While we were never "required" to wear suits to work pre-COVID, they were encouraged when meeting with various clientele and/or other events that would warrant a decent photo op. C19 killed this in its entirety. I think everyone wore the full fit when they ordinarily would online, and slowly dropped off... layer by layer.

Same goes for me. I started off wearing a jacket & maybe a tie during important virtual meetings, just because everyone else was doing it. Would then drop the dress pants/shoes entirely (no idea why I did that in the first place... maybe I thought they were gonna make me stand up and twirl?), then dropped the sportcoat in lieu of a vest or a q-zip depending on the formality. Nowadays, it's mostly just a button-down if I even need to turn my camera on for any meeting when I choose to WFH. We're back to 5-day in-office weeks if it's needed, which pretty much means I'm in the office every day. Not that I'm complaining, I was going crazy sitting at my home desk for nine hours a day.

Everyone has kind of agreed virtual meetings with facial presentations aren't needed, so we're just wired into a Teams call or I'll dial in from my phone. In that case, I am not changing out of my joggers and sweatshirt. No need!

Edit: oh yeah, like Arroz said, definitely wake up an hour before you need to be online to properly groom yourself. If I'm just meeting with my team and no superiors (or those that are chill) then I've gone full-on sweatshirt & Yankees hat without shower. Not something I like to do often - shaving, washing face, brushing teeth, and combing hair will matter far more than whether or not you've got a blazer on.

not what the discussion here is about, but I'm only in 1, maybe 2 days a week and I really have gone crazy at home just pacing around turning comments. 2-3 days would be ideal, but my team is generally older and they're all fine with being remote for the most part, which sucks for junior staff that needs to learn the industry and progress in their careers. Because fuck it:

Not sure where you live, but many new apartments are being built with workstations / work areas on the bottom floors. It might be worth looking into.

If you aren’t able to find anything suitable or affordable have you thought about trying WeWork? I know that the pricing isn’t that great, but if remote work is messing up your mental health and you can afford WeWork perhaps it’s worth a shot.

I am in Zoom meetings every day and my attire is shorts/jeans/khakis with either a polo or a button down semi dress shirt. If I want to get more dressed, I will throw on a stylish dress shirt.  Some people are a little more dressed up than me while others a lot less dressed up than me.

Isaiah - you get a new job or something?

Yeah I just started a new position at a small PE shop. My boss (the head of the company) lives near me so we will meet up 2x week, but the rest of the team and portfolio companies are scattered across the world, so a lot of Zoom meetings.

I'll probably have a collared shirt as my go-to, but every now and then I think a blue pinstripe jacket with a white V neck would look smooth as hell.
