What has been your most complimented fragrance/s

No surprise here but mine has been Mont Blanc Legend. However, my favorite and my girl friends favorite is YSL La Nuit de L'homme. Everyone who's smelled my all my fragrances up close likes this one the most too. But from wearing my frags in public, Mont Blanc has been my most complimented.

Mont Blanc (assuming you're talking about Explorer) and other similars to Aventus will get the job done. Same goes for other tried and true designer fragrances like Bleu de Chanel, YSL Y, etc. etc. No points for originality though haha.

Check out some Tom Fords for a step up from the basic designer stuff. Ombre Leather, Oud Wood, Tobacco Vanille, Noir Extreme are pretty fantastic.

I'd look into some more niche fragrances as well. A few I'd recommend that are really likeable while still having a unique edge to them (so you don't smell like everyone else):

- Fragrance du Bois, Oud Bleu Intense (really like Oud Vert Intense also)

- Parfums de Marly, Galloway (also check out Herod)

- Xerjoff, Nio (a really top quality photorealistic citrus fragrance if you like those)

Always liked the smell of Jazz Club, but there’s def a smoky note and I didnt want to smell like a smoker hahaha… any thoughts on what the ladies think before I make the buy?

Personally am loving it, gets stronger the more it’s on your skin and changes flavour slightly. Feels very nice for (summer)events, going out for dates or dinner (with clients, although I’d be careful there to not stretch it). For office difficult. A senior once told me some (including him) like it, but some old school partners dislike it on junior staff.

I dated one chick who told me that she could sense the testosterone coming out of my pores. She said it was the hottest thing ever and it would turn her on every time she got near me.

This is going to depend on the scent, as some are stronger or weaker than others, and your skin will react differently to different scents. So ultimately, it's up to you to figure out what the right number of sprays and applications is for a given fragrance. Solicit feedback from someone you're comfortable with, your spouse, a coworker, your mom, etc. That said I do believe that in most settings (office, date, everyday wear) less is more. I'll go for two pulse points on the neck, and if the fragrance isn't heavily concentrated or oil-based, a spray or two on my shirt.

Also - what is everyones method for applying cologne? Back in the day I felt like I applied too little or too much.

Two sprays in front of you, walk through it. If you have a date that night, you could spray your neck lightly from 1ft away.

I am a self-admitted fraghead. I have ~50 bottles in my collection, and lord knows how many more decants/partials (and this is after thinning the herd due to a recent move). Nice to see a few niche houses getting love in this thread.

I know this doesn't answer the OP's question (which I will get to in a moment), but what I've learned through collecting and smelling countless fragrances over the years is to simply wear them because YOU like them. Not because you think they will yield compliments from a colleague, stranger, or woman you're trying to seduce. Wearing fragrances you genuinely enjoy and that make you feel good is a huge confidence boost, and that goes a lot further in terms of "getting compliments" or getting others to like and perceive you in a positive way. Felt it was important to caveat the below with this.

Now to answer OP's question, there are certain fragrances that I've noticed get more unprovoked attention than others (positive and negative). Basically, positive fragrances are popular for good reason. I'll group some below:

Positive:

  • Creed Aventus - a staple you can't go wrong with in just about any situation. However, there are now a ton of copycats and clones available such that I'd never purchase a bottle of the OG again. Check out Dua Fragrances or Club De Nuit Intense Man.
  • Dior Sauvage Elixir - this one exploded onto the market last year and has been called the Drakkar Noir of this generation. Probably my favorite release of the past 5 or so years. A little strong on projection for the office, but can be worn if you limit to one or two sprays
  • Amouage Interlude Man - great office/day-time scent
  • YSL La Nuit - mentioned above; great date night scent
  • Genre Parfums RAMC - indie house, great summer scent that women and men have remarked positively on frequently
  • Tom Ford Oud Wood - perfect office scent, but may get you more compliments from men than women (i.e. this isn't a very "seductive" scent)

Negative:

  • Tom Ford Tobacco Oud - this one grew on me over time but women hate it for the most part. It's definitely not for everyone and I'd only ever recommend to experienced fragheads
  • Nasomatto Black Afgano - same comment as Tobacco Oud
  • John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider - I absolutely love this fragrance but it is extremely polarizing. Seems like people either absolutely love it or want to vomit at the thought of sniffing this a second time
  • Byredo Pulp - very interesting scent, but seems like a lot of people pick up on a bit of a "rotting fruit" note that can be offputting
  • Anything by Zoologist - I love these as an olfactory experience, but do not wear to the office or on a date night

I can add to this list but these are mostly fragrances most of you are likely to actually come across at some point.

Oh man, that is tough. First, I'll go with vintage Tom Ford Oud Wood (it was reformulated, the gold bottle is the OG. If you want to check out something that is even closer to the original than the current gray bottle Oud Wood, check out Thameen Carved Oud). This one really sent me down the rabbit hole on collecting fragrances, so in addition to being a great scent and extremely versatile, it holds a special place in my mind for that reason alone. Second I will go with Acqua Di Gio Profumo. Another extremely versatile scent that works well across seasons and situations; another compliment getter I could have included in the original list. It's also much less popular now than when it first came out. Last I'll go with John Varvatos Dark Rebel (not to be confused with Dark Rebel Rider mentioned in my above post). Much different than the other two scents I listed: boozy, darker, and more masculine, but it requires a bit more confidence to wear.

Ask me again in a week and I will probably have a different answer. If you extended this to five, I'd add Sauvage Elixir and Tom Ford Mandarino di Amalfi for something that's a bit more pure summer (I really like Tom Ford's private blends, probably my favorite house).
