What is life like being a banker in LA?

Currently a first year at a NYC BB

Recently a few opportunities came my way with BBs and EBs in LA, seriously considering the move now because I am tired of the city. I have friends and family in LA for context

My key question is - which areas do you live in as an IB analyst in LA, and do you drive to work? What's the commute like? Having been in New York for a long time and I've always taken late night Ubers home. How are things different in LA? Vibes?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, life as a banker in LA offers a different vibe compared to NYC. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Living Areas:

    • Popular areas for IB analysts in LA include Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Brentwood, and Century City. These neighborhoods are desirable for their proximity to work, lifestyle amenities, and overall quality of life.
    • Some analysts also live in Downtown LA (DTLA) if their office is located there, but many prefer the beachside or Westside neighborhoods for a better work-life balance.
  2. Commute and Transportation:

    • Unlike NYC, where public transit and late-night Ubers dominate, LA is a car-centric city. Most analysts drive to work, and having a car is almost a necessity.
    • Commute times can vary depending on where you live and work. For example, if you live in Santa Monica and work in Century City, the commute might be 20-30 minutes. However, traffic can be unpredictable, especially during rush hours.
    • Public transit options like the Expo Line exist but are limited compared to NYC's subway system. Some analysts find it convenient for specific routes, like traveling between Santa Monica and Downtown LA.
  3. Late Nights and Safety:

    • Late-night Ubers are still an option, but most analysts prefer driving themselves. Parking is generally available near offices, and the city is more spread out, so you won’t experience the same density as NYC.
  4. Vibes and Lifestyle:

    • LA offers a more laid-back and sunny lifestyle compared to the hustle of NYC. The proximity to beaches, outdoor activities, and a generally more relaxed atmosphere can be a refreshing change.
    • However, the city is sprawling, so you won’t find the same density of finance professionals or networking opportunities as in NYC. That said, the LA IB scene is strong, with top groups like Moelis, Goldman TMT, and Houlihan Restructuring offering excellent deal flow and exit opportunities.
  5. Cultural Differences:

    • LA’s finance culture is often described as slightly more casual and lifestyle-oriented compared to NYC. While the hours can still be long, the environment might feel less intense, and the weather certainly helps.

If you’re tired of NYC and have friends and family in LA, the move could be a great fit, especially if you value a better work-life balance and a change of pace. Just be prepared for the car-centric lifestyle and the sprawling nature of the city!

No idea, but curious, why tired of NYC?

He's a first year - hasn't been in NYC long enough to experience it.

Only the strongest survive.

I've lived and worked on 4 continents and NYC is the only place I've never gotten "tired" of.

Yeah NYC is the number one city in the world. I like you fat banana - you signed up for WSO 9 years ago then took a break and came back?

I'm gonna take a wild guess it's probably the exact same as IB in NYC, but with better weather, probably better food, and a beach.

And horrific traffic.
