What's Your Experienced with Speeding Ticket?
I used my protected week for the holiday season and just had a long drive from Chicago to Austin, TX. On Christmas day, I was given a speeding citation ($200+) for 52 mph on a 40 mph road (I swear the road looks like a highway and there were a couple cars speeding ahead of me)
I'd love to hear the experience from you guys regarding the traffic tickets: do you dispute or always pay'em up? The fine isn't the problem but I am afraid it'll increase my insurance premium significantly. Thanks a lot!
Edit: On a side note, I noticed there was an option for Texans to do an online traffic school and have the ticket dismissed. I don't have a Texas driver's license, but does anyone know how does it work / is it exclusive for states like Texas.
Not sure about laws in your state but will you get points for going 11 over? You should go to court if you can on that date given and just plead to the judge some nonsense. Best case they dismiss it from what I’ve seen many times, they say “bad boy” and just make you pay a fine with no points and if that happens, your insurance won’t care
This is actually under state law of Texas, no points or court date. I've been searching on how they do things here but it seems I can claim the "option" of presenting my case on court.
If you are willing to appear in “court” you will pop in for an afternoon, sit down for 5 mins with a prosecutor who represents the state/county, and settle the ticket in 5 mins.
They will likely knock it down to whatever the next level is. So, in your case, it will be some variation of lowering the $$ amount, points, or getting you under the 10 mph over mark.
If you can sneak out of work for a few hours to do it it is worth it. I just went through the same rodeo for a +20 over in a work zone which was not a cheap ticket/point total in NYS.
I live in Texas and just got a speeding ticket on Christmas Eve. You’re right that in Texas there is an option to pay to do a defensive driving course which is pretty simple and takes a day to complete. After you pass the course the speeding ticket won’t appear on your driving record once you’ve submitted proof of completion to the court. Not sure if it’s specific to Texas as I’ve never gotten a ticket in other stares. Also there is a probationary period (1 year I think) so if you get another ticket within this time you can’t do the course again to remove the second ticket
Seems like the holiday season is a busy time for them. Based on other people's comments here, I did a little research on the traffic point system and it appears this won't reduce any points (strangely, on the ticket, no fine amount or point deduction was specified)
Would you suggest I still go to the court since I assume most people might choose the driving course given the option?
Most courts now are "zoom" courts so you don't have to appear (at least on the east coast this is the case, due to COVID). There are a bunch of things you can do to fight the ticket (ask for Discovery to get all notes / records from the cop, challenge the calibration of their radar / laser, etc.) For 10 over, as another user mentioned, they'll usually drop it down a level.
If you pay the ticket, you are admitting guilt and it will appear on your record. The question is more if the points transfer (since the ticket was out of state) to yours and if it will hit your insurance (due to out of state). I'd do some research on your own on this and proceed accordingly.
The best way to get out of ticket is to make sure you have a good looking female in the front seat with you.
dont speed? youre not getting anywhere quicker going 15 over between reds. only place i speed is in the left lane on the highway and my car beeps when i approach a camera. if you're rich enough to not care, you're rich enough to have your assistant pay the ticket.

My last ticket was on my bicycle - the cop said I ran 2 stop signs and gave me 2 $180 tickets in another state. I admit I did run 1 stop sign, but not 2. He said he wouldn’t give me a ticket for the second, but lied as I had to pay $360 in the ticket system. Asshole cop.

Not sure how it works in Texas, but in my state, if the officer doesn't show up in court, the ticket is dismissed so always worth the gamble. I've had a few tickets and most times the cops never showed up. Other time, got it knocked down for giving halfway decent excuses.
