Which Club is Phil Mickelson Not Going to Use This Weekend?

The British Open begins on Thursday, and Lefty will be going in without a driver. Mickelson will be playing with four wedges and two 3-irons (one of them with the loft tweaked to give a stronger ball flight). Mickelson's longest club will be the 3-wood, which happens to be the same club he had when he won the British Open at Muirfield in 2013. This also happened to be Phil's last victory.

Personally, I don't understand the point of teeing off without the risk of hitting the foursome on the fairway over, but I guess Phil is the pro here. Mickelson claims he can hit his 3-wood just as far as he hits his driver. But let's be real Phil, is it really the same?

Let me know what you think about Phil's asinine move.

He's 47 years old so I don't think he has a chance. It makes a lot of sense if the course doesn't get wet. I use a 13.5 degree 3 wood and can hit some awesome stingers into the wind. Phil's is 11.5 degrees so it's basically like hitting driver 10 yards less. It is easier to hit and also easier to flight a 3 wood than a driver. He has that juiced up 3 iron (basically a driving iron) because you absolutely need one to play links golf.

For the average joe a 3 wood struck properly can sometimes go longer than driver due to better launch and spin.

This is smart on him and a good approach. He has shown he can play links golf well but the state of his game this year, combined with a new caddie, and I don't see him likely being a challenger. That said it would be pretty damn cool to see him get a second Open Championship.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.
