Why are Wharton kids so weird?

I attended a few case competitions this year and had the unpleasant surprise of meeting a couple of Wharton students. I kid you not, one of them walks up to me and, without introducing himself, started to ask about my internships. When I reluctantly told him, he said something along the lines of "huh you're probably gonna re-recruit full time then?" ... the fuck? This guy did not have any social awareness and was weirdly overly competitive. Similar vibes with the other Wharton students. I've also anecdotally heard there is a large amount of backstabbing, cheating, gatekeeping  etc. in Wharton clubs, and there isn't any true companionship. I understand Wharton kids do well in recruiting, and in their careers in general, but why do you have to be so autistic at the same time?

Anyone who knew pre-UG they wanted to work in finance is the type of person I would never want to grab a beer with

True. Normal people dream of traveling to impoverished nations, killing the local males and tricking local woman into sleeping with them by promising them a better life back in the states.

Only the true weirdos would rather spend their time working in a cushy finance job and going out with their college buddies in NYC over the weekends.

Yea it really just depends which kids you meet. I’ve learned you can’t generalize a single school. Oddly enough, the most hyper competitive, prestige obsessed, and frankly annoying kids I’ve met were from NYU and Kelley Workshop, but I’ve also met/worked with super cool kids from both schools. Have definitely met some boners from Wharton (and Stanford, Yale, Princeton) but the best female co-worker I’ve ever had was from Wharton. Super competitive, but extremely caring, diligent, humble, and loyal. Was very level headed w/ egalitarian disposition. Wouldn’t have known where she went to UG unless you saw her linkedin. Also met a guy from Wharton through recruiting with like 30 internships including MF PE, T1 VC, and BB M&A, and he was the same way. All that to say that every school has its good and bad - you’re first introduction just happened to be the latter.

Yeah I met some NYU Stern kids once and I'm sure they all got good jobs, but it seemed like they were obsessed with finance and their placements lmao. We were at a birthday party and they just kept talking about that stuff lol.

I've found that people from elite schools in general going to finance/law/med, can be transactional and aloof, it's just part of an unhealthy mentality not exclusive to Wharton or finance.

Many are used to operating within hierarchical, performance-based environments and haven’t spent much time outside that “elite” bubble yet, which can lead to self-centeredness, lack of awareness and a certain myopic focus. This isn’t true for everyone, but I’ve encountered it fairly often, including at my own alma mater.

Its just because shit is hella competitive here. Stern and Dyson and shit get all this flack for being ultracompetitive, and no one mentions this about Wharton because supposedly the prestige means your floor is limited and everyone who wants it gets the job they want/a good job. Our IB placement rate is like 60%, so barely better than the low-ranked schools which are like 30-50%. Plus so many people (100+) seriously gun for PE/HF and there are like 15 spots total out of penn (CAS kids get like 2-3). That's where most of the competitiveness comes from.

No matter where you are, a competitive environment is no reason to act unfriendly, unprofessional or generally like a spoiled brat.

Reminds me of that “Umm…moving away from salary discussion…I was just wondering if we could talk about…like…the culture…” W kid from the crashing recruiting events vid.

The chudification continues 😂

Just look at this forum... all I get from the "target-"students here is a feeling, that they have a weird & annoying elitism to them. They won out in the admission lottery through diversity, legacy and randomness and feel like the new king in town.

If there wasnt people with actually great comments & insights on this site, I would ditch it immediately to not engage with these spoiled brats. "I only got a Barclays offer, am I cooked!?!?!?!?"

To caveat, many elite universities outside the Ivies place little or no weight on legacy or athletic preferences so it is as meritocratic there as anything can be in life. Also, not all minorities should be lumped together - Asians were not beneficiaries of diversity-based admissions, and race is no longer considered now.

At Ivy League schools, legacy, donors, and recruited athletes account for roughly 30% of seats, so I agree that those demographics reflect unearned privilege which should be revoked. However, the majority of students are still admitted primarily on academic and extracurricular achievement and have statistically higher stats across the board (discipline, academic performance, and effort). At many non-Ivy elite schools, that share is even higher, and it reflects a more accurate baseline.

Unearned privilege? I strongly disagree the football guy on scholarship bringing in millions for the universality is there on unearned privilege. Ditto for children of donors doling out big money. That seat was earned and paid for.

A smart guy wouldnt say that outloud in front of you but they would think those to themsrlves silently.

All people do this, this person is just candid enough to say out loud. Candid quality is more prevcious than uou think

Because they think they’re the shit but I went there and I legit was like woah these kids even talk weird and have different college kid pastimes trust me I’m no genius & it was not even that challenging HENCE why the rich kids on wall st are the most useless of all like they don’t have to hustle and they’re garunteed positions because they just place holders for their fathers wealth & influence but they are the dumbest at least on the trading floors in ny they sit there and act so ridiculous showing u how that’s legitimately their first job in their life at like 23 and they bitch and act like they’re 8th grade stoners and leave at 2 in their first year on the job and that’s insulting and guess who has to take up their slack.. not rich kids who needa bust ass
