Yik Yap App Popular on Wall St.?
Hey guys, wondering how many of you guys use Yik Yak as a way to communicate / kill time during the day? If so or if not, how old are you? Figured may be more popular with some of the analysts since it's pretty young...
Thanks,
Patrick
its used a lot at my school
I have used it a few times to kill some time. I find that it's mostly college students complaining.
I thought it was only college kids. Still go on sometimes.
I've been using it pretty consistently for over a year, it's hilarious. Was really big at my undergrad too. And they just raised that Sequoia-led 62mm round...
Never heard of it.

Used it all the time in college last spring. Graduated and still consistently use it as an analyst - i even got some of my closest analyst friends using it. yak game hasn't been as good though recently with all the college kids on break.
Ive never used it, but its amazing how the founders are both 23 year old kids and just closed a giant, sequoia-backed round.
I graduated college recently('13) and back when I was a freshman-junior in 2010-2012 College ACB and Texts From Last Night were really popular - and before I got to college Juicy Campus was basically College ACB. Yik Yak seems to be a sort of mix between ACB and TFLN, the same format as TFLN but the intimacy (gossip, bullying, name calling, etc) of ACB. I dont believe that ACB or Juicy Campus ever monetized although they had a shitload of users. I looked up the founder of JC the other day because I was curious what happened and it looks like he was college age at the time and has moved on to Stanford GSB then a new startup. The founders of ACB seem to be working on new things as well after the site got crushed for excessive bullying/gossip. I just looked and it seems like TFLN is still around, but I doubt anybody really visits that site anymore - especially now that Yik Yak has basically made a better version of it.
I think there will always be a market for these types of apps, I know there have been a ton of clones (whisper, new secret, etc.) trying to capture the same demographic but Yik Yak seems to be getting a ton of downloads and the valuation keeps rising. Where else are 18-21 year old college kids going to get their gossip/anecdotes about drinking, hooking up, unprotected sex, greek life, and being away from their parents?
Wtf is Yik Yak
I know they just got like 60M in funding. I don't understand how they think they can monetize. I feel like the content is way too controversial for any serious company to pay for ad space and have its brand associated with the anonymous drivel posted by a bunch of horny teenagers and distraught bankers.
If they don't make money via ads, the only other thing I can think of is charging for the app; however, someone will just make a new free app if this is the case.
All that being said, I'm a clueless college kid with no knowledge of venture capital or the tech/media industries. Would love hear the thoughts of some more knowledgeable users.
Never heard of it until today. Just checked out the website and some of those main page quotes are hilarious.
How does Yik Yak plan to monetize?
Also, peek into Disney Land Yak for fun toilet reading.
During the summer they had featured Yaks from "The Interning Wolves of Wall Street". Pretty much everyone ragging on Goldman summers.
never heard of it
