Your dopamine

Hello Investment bankers, I’m balls deep into my technical journey and university. But, before I commit; I wanted to come out and ask:

What gives you dopamine on the job-besides the pay check?

What do you look up to at work?

And if you’ve been at it for a while without exit, why?

( Please provide what sector/department you work in as well)

Associate 1 in PE - LBOs:

I was told everyone needs a why - either its because you want to be a career banker, PE, you are competitive and want top bucket, you want cash to start your own company, etc everyone has something that drives them

Yeah but all the reasons they give are money centered, some people commit to one bank and climb the ranks some quit entirely. I want to understand their reasoning. What’s actually fun about the job?

Some people like working on deals and the adrenaline that comes with that. Its like saying why do rich people work - because they like the core job. I liked my banking experience then moved on to PE because i wanted to be an investor. I went to the fund that i thought would give me the best experience vs the one that had the highest offer letter.

Years in now and still feels amazing to close a transaction. It's less a dopamine hit and more sinking into my chair, enjoying the post cortisol comedown, and doing nothing for the rest of the day.

There is a thrill to being a part of a transaction that closes. Less so when I was a junior part of the deal, more running one, even more when point on negotiations,, managing board / special commmittee etc. Especially anything tough, hairy, complex etc.

And how does that affect your plans going forward? Do you want to feel what it’s like head hunting clients and doing the “big boy” shit?

Already doing that and I love it. With the caveat that I chose not to stay the big bank path and am somewhere WLB is much more palatable and the politics are zero, naturally with a haircut on comp. But I'm also not the "need to optimize my path and maximize comp" kinda guy.

I really enjoy what I do, I fucking love the game, and I'm happy to be able to do it somewhere I don't have to sacrifice having a life. Most of my deals don't make headlines, some do, but fuck do I care when I'm home by 6.
