Best e-reader?
I'm looking for the best e-reader. I actually need to read books (.pdf's mainly) on it, so all other functions rank a distant second in importance. Price is not important.
Any suggestions?

I'm a big Kindle fan. I was one of the early adopters of Kindle technology, and I'm still banging away with my 1st-generation Kindle. Amazon just announced the 3rd-generation, and it is not only much slicker, it is much cheaper (my original Kindle was $400). They're even offering an all wi-fi Kindle for $139. If you want one with wi-fi and 3G connectivity, they now sell that model for $189.
They display pdf very well, and Amazon will convert pdf's to Kindle format for free if you need it (some pdf files render better when converted - charts, etc...). Overall, a great device. I'm just waiting for the price to drop to $99 before I replace my older model!
I will agree with Edmundo, but would also like to throw the Ipad into the mix. It is rather pricey for just a reader capability, but I absolutely love reading on it. I download a lot of magazines and read them on the pad, plus I have countless text books. Once school starts again I plan on having all my text books put on it and with OS 4 multitasking I can have a recorder app going on recording the class with my book open.
Eddy is the screen size large enough for textbooks? I want to do some independent study (mathematics, philosophy, and maybe some chemistry), do you think the Kindle will work for this?
Anthony I thought about the IPad but I have enough distractions as it is; there's no chance would I be able to get any work done with the ultimate consumption device. I've also heard that the Kindle is better for "real" reading.
If you know you're going to be reading a significant (I would say more than 10) number of textbooks, you're going to have to go with the Kindle DX. It's pricier at $379, but designed specifically for textbook reading. No other reader on the market comes close. I have a friend in med school and she's using a DX for some of her textbooks and loves it.
I think it would be a mistake to buy a 6" Kindle when only the 9" screen will do a textbook justice. Just my two cents. Probably worth the extra bucks if you know that's how you're going to be using it.
The other plus is that I've noticed every Kindle model is currently sold out except for the DX. I ended up having to wait a couple months on mine, so if you need something immediately, the DX is the only option. The other nice thing about it (depending upon how much you travel) is that the wireless works worldwide. My 1st gen Kindle only works in the States, and that's kind of a drag if you travel a lot or live outside the country (like I do).
