Exit Opps: How Do You Search for Chief of Staff / Cool Strategy Roles (Especially in AI)?

At the stage in my career where I feel it's time to build something, even if not from the ground floor, but have found laughably few consolidated resources with what the "best" Chief of Staff / CorpStrat foles are, especially at AI companies? Specifically, a lot of opps are at speculative ventures, have horrific pay (I'm expecting a cut coming from IB->PE, but jeez), pretty limited tasks, etc.

The one role I've found (not an ad, I proomise) that seems to be pretty exciting is the Mercor SPL role, though that may be way too grindy / banking-like for some or most. But I'm having trouble actually finding roles that fit; you go on the websites of the big AI labs, for example, and most of the roles are either for sales jobs or AI training, which isn't exactly what I'm looking for either. Any pointers?

To find Chief of Staff or strategic roles in AI, especially ones that align with your background and expectations, here are some actionable steps based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Target Companies with Strategic AI Initiatives:
Look beyond speculative ventures and focus on established companies with AI-driven strategies. Notable examples include tech giants like Google, Apple, and Uber, which are known for offering roles in corporate strategy, data analytics, and "special projects" teams. These roles often sit within groups like corporate development, internal consulting, or strategic planning.

  2. Leverage Networking:
Many high-impact strategy roles, especially in niche areas like AI, are not widely advertised. Tap into your network, including former colleagues, alumni, and industry contacts, to uncover hidden opportunities. Networking at AI-focused conferences or events can also help you connect with decision-makers.

  3. Explore Non-Traditional Job Boards:
While traditional job boards may not yield the best results, platforms like WSO's Talent Oasis or niche AI job boards can be more effective. These platforms often feature curated roles that align with your interests.

  4. Focus on "Value Creation" Roles:
Many AI companies are looking for professionals who can bridge the gap between technical teams and business strategy. Roles in "value creation" or portfolio management at AI-focused firms could align well with your skill set.

  5. Consider Functional Strategy Roles:
If Chief of Staff roles are limited, explore functional strategy roles in areas like product, marketing, or supply chain within AI companies. These roles often provide a strategic lens while allowing you to work closely with AI-driven initiatives.

  6. Be Open to Emerging Opportunities:
While some roles may seem "grindy" or banking-like, they can offer valuable exposure to the AI space. For example, roles like the Mercor SPL position you mentioned might provide a stepping stone to more senior strategic positions.

  7. Tailor Your Search to Specific Groups:
Within AI companies, look for roles in "office of the CEO," "special projects," or corporate strategy divisions. These groups often handle high-impact, cross-functional initiatives and are more likely to align with your career goals.

By combining these strategies, you can identify and secure roles that align with your background and aspirations in the AI space.
