Field Exam Team (Valuation and Advisory Group) Confused on Exit Opportunities. Suggestions Needed

Hey everyone,

I’m graduating college this May and have accepted a return offer to work on the Field Exam team at a private firmwithin their Advisory, Valuation, and Appraisal group. Our work primarily involves analyzing financial statements, assessing collateral such as accounts receivable and inventory, and conducting on-site field exams for banks, private equity groups, and hedge funds. We focus on evaluating a company’s financial health, verifying reported assets, and identifying potential risks before lenders and investors extend credit or complete transactions. From what I understand, this work falls under financial due diligence, given the in-depth financial analysis, risk assessment, and operational reviews we conduct.

That said, I’m pretty confused about my potential exit opportunities. While I appreciate the experience, I don’t plan on staying in this role long-term, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to leverage this background. I’ve considered paths such as corporate development, where financial due diligence and evaluating acquisition targets seem relevant, or possibly private equity or investment banking, though I’m unsure how well field exam experience translates to those fields. I’ve also thought about FP&A or treasury roles in corporate finance, but I’m not sure if this background is too niche. Another potential option could be consulting or transaction advisory (TAS), given the due diligence aspect of the work.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has worked in field exam or a similar role and successfully transitioned elsewhere. What are the most common exits, and what steps should I take to move into a better long-term career path? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!
