How to get into Asia?

I'm soon starting with a large commercial bank outside the US. I'm probably looking too far forward, but I want to end up working in Asia. Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai..

My company has large operations in all of these countries. But how do people end up working there? Is it only upper level executives who get emails to work there, or is there any chance an invitation may find its way to me one day? Is it something you have to actively seek?

Before anyone asks, I intend to bring my partner, so I'm not going there looking for hunnies.

any other reason? Is it the culture? The food? being abroad in a place that's completely different in many ways from the western world? The adventure? We've already discounted the ladies...

Moving within your company is definitely the way to go. I'm not sure about your organization but that's how a lot of people do it. From time to time there will be opportunities (ie. expansion, people leaving, others trying to move back the other way, a need for an extra set of hands for a few weeks/months - which can become permanent etc..). If you hear of something, talk to the person in question, approach your boss(es) and let them know that you would like to pitch in and help out the team and that you personally want the experience.

Chances are the opportunity (like most things) won't fall in your lap. But if it does, take it. Otherwise, put out some light feelers, ask senior people what Asia is like, is the growth there, what's the strategy (based on what you have heard/read in the news or heard around the company). That way you can look like you are interested in the company and its growth initiatives and strategy as well. Keep your eyes and ears peeled since people will talk about and then jump in.

Good luck.

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.
