Investor Relations as a stepping stone in to finance

I’m soon to graduate university this year and a potential offer in IR has come up. My degree is in economics and isn’t from the most prestigious of universities, yet I want to start a career in the finance sector.
The firm is relatively new and this is their first graduate roll, I feel firm growth is promising, yet is investor relations a good starting job into the finance space?
Will it open doors for me as a good stepping stone into other finance sectors in the future, or am I about to lead myself down a very specific path which will be hard to jump off… I have come to the conclusion with graduate roles not to aim for the stars, and this may be my best option in getting into the finance space early.
Anyone in IR that has any experience I would really appreciate some advice

Considerations for Your Background: Given your degree in economics and the fact that you’re graduating from a less prestigious university, starting in IR could be a practical way to break into the finance sector. It’s a role that values interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, which might help offset the lack of a top-tier university background.
Final Thoughts: If this is your best option to enter the finance space early, it’s worth considering, especially if the firm’s growth trajectory looks promising. However, be mindful that IR can lead to a more specialized career path, so if you’re aiming for broader finance roles in the future, you’ll need to actively network and potentially pursue additional qualifications (e.g., CFA) to keep your options open.

IR at a corporate isn’t a bad starting gig but you’d find it hard to switch to IB from it. Best bet would probably be a UK IB or broking team.
