MS in Risk Management - Career choices?
So I just graduated college with a degree in Accounting (I know, I know) with a pretty solid GPA. As most of you know, in order to get the CPA license, you would need 150 credit hours, which most people do with a MAcc.
However, my school has a new program, MS in Risk Management with a concentration in Accounting, which looked very interesting to me. I decided I would go this route because I will still be qualified to sit for the CPA but possibly have more opportunities in areas other than accounting. In fact, my RM classes are 100x more interesting.
The problem is, I am not too sure where or what jobs I can apply to with a MS in Risk Management. Only the Big 4 and a few other companies actively recruit at my firm. I recently had an interview with GS for the operational risk division but didn't get an offer.
So my question is, what can I do with a MS in Risk Management (other than to obtain 150 credit hours)? When and how would I apply to F500 firms that don't actively recruit at my school? Keep in mind this is for entry-level positions and my only real work experience consists of a few internships.
Any help would be appreciated.
If this is not a target school your best afterwards is to go to Big 4 and work in derivatives valuation, model validation and risk consulting and after that for some back / middle office in a bank as a risk manager. Not very attractive in my opinion.
How quantitative is the degree? I would advice against MS in RM unless you really want to work in that field. Definitely harder to explain why you want a FO position if you have a degree in risk management.
The degree is a lot more quantitative then the MAcc. I already started the program and there is little to no theory and a lot of calculations, such as Black-Scholes and actuarial statistics.
The reason I decided to take the MS in RM was to stand out from all the other accounting majors and because I didn't want another degree in accounting. I figured it will make the Big 4 and other firms more interested in me as I look more well-rounded and would have some knowledge outside of accounting.
My main goal was to get a job at the Big 4 in audit or tax, but now I feel a whole new world opened up to me. The problem is I don't know what I can do once i graduate with MS in RM. You're solution actually seems interesting to me. I will have to look into that.
