Psychology undergrad vs Business

I am a sophmore at and I need to declair my major soon. I really enjoy psychology even though there are a lot of papers with that major ( i heard) and I am more of a math minded person. My ultimate goal in life is to be rich. My parents are telling me to Major in Business because there are more job opportunities once I am done with college. My advisor was telling me that diversity in the Business world is important and I feel like there are four million average joe Business majors here. Some people also say do what you love and the money will follow - which sounds nice but sounds a little to fourtune cookie and not too much reality. My advisor said I can major in what I like now because it doens't even really reflect what you do later, then she showed me all these people that aren't doing what they majored in. Im not sure what I want to do. I feel like I have a talent that I don't know of and if I stick with psychology then it will lead me to good places, but I am also afraid that I am just being niave. Its hard to make a decision like this so young. I can't see myself working up a coorperate ladder in a cubbicle but maybe thats just my distorted perception of the business world. I am willing to go to more schooling if necessary. I was thinking of majoring in psych and if its not something I like the get my MBA. I just need some people to paint me a clearer picture of the world because I'm prettty lost. I was thinking of Major psych then law school then lawyer, then do investment and other things on the side becaue i love working and making money. I am planing on working at H & R block duing tax season and other little things like that but I don't know what my core career should be, its so hard to know, I'm 19. is a minor in accounting or economics or just a general business minor enough to not exclude me from the real world. start my own business and get lucky? I need help , someone give me some mentour speech stuff. lol. Thankyou. I believe in myself a lot and i know i can do anything i just want to pick the right thing. I don't want to be molded into some business person and lose my individuality. then again that could be a misperception of mine because i have no real world knowledge i don't know . thankyou

In my experience, I haven't seen a psychology major break into IB, but that's not to say it's impossible. However, I spent time in a Big 4 accounting firm as well and there were some psych majors there. They either double majored (always a possibility) or minored in business/accounting and broke in that way.

If you like psychology do psychology. You can always go back for your MBA if you end up not liking psychology, or it doesn't turn out the way that you had hoped. I actually did a business undergrad and went back for my MBA. In my opinion, it was very redundant for me, and I kind of wished that I had studied something else during undergrad.

I majored in psych in college because I couldnt decide what I wanted to do with my life. In retrospect, I should have at least minored in something that was more business focused. With that said, my degree in pysch did not limit my opps (interviewed with a variety of companies including Goldman, GE, etc.) and ended up in PE for the past 5 years. While I think a lot of what I learned as a psych major was worthless there are various aspects of the degree that have helped me in my career. For example, I think I am more well-rounded as I was exposed to a wider variety of topics relative to pure finance folks. Ultimately it comes down to the individual, not the degree, to determine where he or she ends up.

For example, there are a ton of liberal arts kids from good schools who make it in IB. Everything that you need to know is easily learned on your own and on the job. Best of luck to you.

if you want to be a lawyer, psych is fine. grades and LSAT are all that matter really for law. most lawyers are money grubbers anyway so if u love money you'll fit right in. be warned that most people not in psych think psych is a fluffy major for dumb sorority girls.

really?? well thankyou for the psych perception. And just for the record I'm not a greedy blood sucking bla bla I just think I would be happiest with expensive toys to play with and opportunities for my kids.

Thankyou everyone for taking time to help me out i really appriciate it. I have trouble sleeping because I feel like I am choosing one of two roads and one is a horrible choice and one is great but I go back and forth on which one is which.

Soo 1. What is IB? 2. Maybe do psych as a BA then I can do Finance for my MBA? 3. I saw that Finance careers pay well but who will do better, --Person A. Goes for psych BA. Then goes for Finance for MBA --Person B. Finance BA then go right into the world. Does MBA really look good to employers.? --Person C. Finance BA then Finance MBA. is that even neccesary . is person c the same as person b.

what i am trying to say is. If I should get MBA either way then I mine as well do psych in undergrad but if MBA is not really that neccessary then I should just do finance for my BA so its less school.

OR

If you think I should just not worry so much and shut the hell up then let me no also.

TROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

both psych and business are easy majors. have you never thought of double majoring? it would be a lot more work than pursuing any one of these single majors, but i don't think that it would be as difficult as doing a single major in hard science / engineering. think about it - a double major would clearly put you above all the pure psych and pure business majors out there.

i could try but im already a sohphmore going to have 58 credits by the end of this semister. It might take an extra year to graduate in which I am technically doing extra schooling so mine as well get MBA.

What did you end up doing???? Im literally trying to make the exact same decision as you had years ago. Currently in A+S finished first year psych and doing summer classes but thinking of transferring to business to do finance or international business, but would that be the same as a psych degree and an MBA??

I have a double major in the hard sciences (was premed at first) and an art (not going to go into which because it would compromise me I wont disclose, feel free to PM) with an average GPA. (3.2 science GPA, 3.5 cumulative). Also had A LOT of extracurriculars through the years (frat, exec board in a club sport, alumni board, undergraduate research, nonprofit work, startup side-gig). The business program at my school was definitely a strong semi-target / borderline target at the UG level and the school is very prestigious in general.

Bad news is, I never put in the time/ effort while in school to learn the financial skills needed to make it into the career I want until now, in my mid-20s (IBD is the dream, post-MBA). I am playing severe catch up career wise and learning wise to match what my friends who were finance majors w/ a higher GPA, way less leadership experience, and an IB Analyst gig.

The good news is, interviewers seem to think I am a very interesting guy. My profile has given me a lot of interview opportunities to jump from BO to MO. I feel like my diverse background makes me a strong candidate for a top 15 B school since I check all the other boxes besides a FO job at a BB / EB / MBB and a super strong GPA, but I am not exactly deficient in these categories either (work for a pretty reputable firm and still passed my classes).

Long story short: there is no 1 path to success, you can either pay now or pay later if you want to make it far in your career. I would recommend you study both, work hard, and pay now.
