Thoughts on Two Opportunities

First, a limited background:

Graduating UG next month, non-target school, second-tier U.S. financial city, embarrassing GPA...

1) Work in my current city for a serial-entrepreneur (HBS grad) with high responsibility and visibility. Supposedly starting two entities and selling another in the future. I will be an excel model junkie and involved in all financing and deal structures of these entities.

Cons: -Risky and speculative but that's entrepreneurship right?! Being a recent grad I know this is the time to take risks but at the same time want to establish myself with a "known" role for future opportunities.

2) FP&A position in a world leading supply chain firm based in HK. I previously lived in HK for 6 months and LOVED IT. I do not yet have a grasp of the language but this can be overcome. I believe this will give me a "differentiating" factor for future opportunities and possibly be the only chance I ever get to work there (15% income tax).

Cons: -It is vanilla FP&A

Originally, I planned to get a job with FactSet / Capital IQ while completing CFA Levels 1 &or 2 and try to get into buy/sell research but the above positions just kind of "fell in my lap."

Ultimate goal: to get into boutique VC/ PE / Corp. Dev. or AM

So, what do you guys think???

I would go with the FP&A firm b/c it would be easy to parlay your experience into a top MBA and then IBD - then PE (the firm is recognized worldwide, plus you'll get finance experience since its FP&A). But the GPA might be an issue - though if you ace the GMAT it shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Still I Rise

I really like the idea of option #1, especially if you're thinking about VC. It's a bigger risk but, if what he says is accurate, I think you could come away from the job with a lot of really great experiences. Working for a (successful) serial entrepreneur on both the building and selling of companies could expose you to a lot of different operational and financial aspects of business that you won't get in FP&A, as well as IBD for that matter. I think this experience could, potentially, really differentiate you from other candidates when you decide to pursue another job if you're, in fact, given the amount of high responsibility that you're currently expecting.

My vote: take a risk.

1 no questions asked and don't look back. Sounds like a great opportunity. With the network you will develop, you will be able to go to an FP&A job easily, but you certainly can't go from FP&A to #1 easily.

1 - assuming you're an articulate person who can describe your experience in a meaningful way, this opportunity sounds awesome. Worst case scenario, the guy is a liar and you're out of a job in 6 months. Then you have an awesome story that most employers would love. (But make sure he likes you, that HBS rec from an alum will help in the future if you can cancel out the "embarrassing GPA".
