Transitioning into Commercial Banking from Insurance
I have been a credit analyst/ underwriter for a niche insurance company for about 6 years. I had a setback early in my career (4 jobs in 4 years) so I have stayed in the company for a while to rinse the “jumper” label. I have worked up to a level with reasonable pay, good work-life balance and benefits (PTOs, 2 work from home days, 15 minute commune).
Lately, I am interested in making a move to commercial banking due to a few reasons.
• Earning potential appears to be higher
• Earning potential for my industry should top out soon.
• I don’t like the niche nature of the insurance.
• Many former coworkers moved into commercial banking.
I am hoping to get some advices in.
• How do I educate myself in commercial banking besides reading Wall Street Oasis? Books, podcasts, etc.?
• Should I get additional training (I have a CPA and CFA)?
• How should I build relationships with commercial bankers? Similar to switching/breaking into any industry, having someone vouch for you > applying to jobs via LinkedIn.
• How do I not take a pay cut transitioning into banking.
Any help is appreciated.
