2026 PE Associate 1 Total Comp

I’m an AN1 who recently decided to pursue off-cycle PE recruiting after initially not being interested in the space. While I’ve found historical comp data, I know that offers for my class are still over a year out, so I’d love to gather some more up-to-date insights.

If anyone is open to sharing, it’d be great to see comp ranges based on the following: Fund Size: (preferably in $B ranges rather than subjective MM/UMM/MF labels), strategy: (PE, GE, VC, etc.), location (general COL as well if preferred for anonymity).

Transparency benefits everyone navigating recruitment, so any data points on what firms are offering PE Associate comp right now would be hugely helpful! Feel free to anonymize as needed.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a snapshot of Private Equity Associate 1 compensation data from recent threads and reports:

  1. Fund Size & Location:

    • For NYC-based funds:
      • $3B Fund: Total Comp ~$290K (Base: $160K, Bonus: ~$130K)
      • $15B+ Fund: Total Comp ~$370K (Base: ~$170K, Bonus: ~$200K)
  2. General Compensation Trends:

    • 1st Year Associate Total Comp averages around $227K (September 2023 data).
    • Compensation can vary significantly based on fund size, strategy, and location. For example, larger funds and high-cost-of-living cities like NYC tend to offer higher compensation.
  3. Strategy Insights:

    • Growth Equity (GE) and Tier 1 funds often align with the higher end of the comp spectrum.
    • Carry is typically not included at the Associate 1 level but becomes more relevant at senior levels.
  4. Regional Variations:

    • In Tier 3 cities (e.g., Denver, Austin), expect a 10-20% discount to market rates, though this varies by firm.
