A Unique Opportunity...Worth it?

So, an alumni contacted me about a position at a very unique firm:

The position is with a small team: 4-5 people make decisions on the deal. The firm researches veterinary hospitals as potential buyouts. The deals range from $1-4 million, and goes through 8-10 deals per year. My job would be to work with a team of 3 (associate, CIO, and another analyst) to value the deal, and work on negotiation terms (putting together a term sheet), as well as working with the CEO as he leads the deal and completes it.

I'm curious: what do you think of this offer? It would be a 2 year position. My job would mainly be cold-calling, as well as due-dilligence. If I want to eventually get into private equity, is this a decent offer, or do you think it might be frowned upon, since the firm is somewhat new, and focuses on a niche strategy? At any VC/PE firm, I'd be happy cold-call all day if it meant breaking directly into the field, but this is very different. Any thoughts on future potential to use as a unique story at business school? The firm works with countless non-profits in the animal-rights activist area as well, so there would be opportunities for that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

if this is the best or only one, take it. i got pretty lucky and landed a PE internship at a boutique-type firm as a junior with a crappy little community college associates degree. i cant tell you the amount of invaluable experience I have gained over the last 7 months. in addition to personally getting to know people with money that make, sell, and structure deals i have used them to network and land a second internship with a regional VC firm. i didnt know how i would like it or where it would/will take me, but im glad i did it. the amount of stuff i learn just sitting in on deal calls and chit-chatting with the MDs and OPs can NOT be quantified.

i think its important to remember that the firm name doesn't always open the most/best doors for you, sometimes its the people at the firm that can do the most for you. you never know who you will meet or who they might know. also, even though the firm name and prestige can be important to getting your resume looked at, ultimately you have to prove you have the skills to get the job done. becoming well rounded is probably one of the most beneficial aspects to working on small, intimate deal teams.
