Actis - thoughts?

Hi all,

Anyone familiar with Actis? Historically EM focused generalist PE but now pivoted to global infrastructure. Particularly looking for insights from those who have seen them on deals as bidders / co-investors / advisers etc. How's their reputation in infra PE? Typically also only recruit from MBA so curious to get insight.

Thanks!

It’s an interesting group, very British… pretty strict summer aso program for hiring. Very kind people, obviously a leader in EMs, but not a lateral destination if that’s what you’re looking for. They’re in that range a bit where they’ve done very well in MENA, APAC, Europe to an extent, and transitioning to America focus as well, so interesting times for them.

I’ve heard similar that historically they almost exclusively look to hire Associates out of business school through their summer Associate program. Maybe a little more flexible in their offices in LatAm.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes given their pivot to more of global infra strategy and the amount of junior talent in Infra PE that is looking to stay in infra long term and skip the MBA

Have worked across the table from them - came across as sharp and pretty nice to work with. Associates were involved in calls (so not the "seen but not hear" treatment for juniors) though they pulled some late hours (not atypical for infra). Strong emerging markets player and had expertise in the specific geography of the deal we were evaluating. No clue on returns / anything more specific, but surface impression seemed to be a good place to work if you have any interest in EM infra.
