advice on calling with managing partner?
Hi guys,
Last week I cold emailed a managing partner of a boutique, who also had an engineering education background like me. I just received his reply email in which he agrees to have a phone call with me and give me some advice.
Since I am pretty much a rookie on this, I am wondering what kinds of questions would be suitable to ask. Can I ask him about internship/job openings? I did mention that I am currently looking for internship in my email. Besides, should I prepare for technical questions?
Any advice would be appreciated!
He's not a god. Ask him how he transitioned from engineering to finance. If he went to your university, talk about that. Keep the conversation light. I've gotten good feedback when asking what materials people would recommend working through to begin a career in finance.
I reached out to a managing partner once; he set me up with an interview. In a small firm, the top guy can do whatever he wants: connecting well might take you places.
On the face of it, I wouldn't expect technical questions. You emailed him asking for advice, and he has underlings to do the dirty work of interviewing. He gets to stick to the fun stuff - namely, getting to know you. I would focus my prep on researching his firm, the types of deals/work they do, and build up as much of a conversational baseline as you can. The higher level you can carry the discussion, the further you'll get into the deal meat of a great discussion, and this is the foundation of a positive relationship.
Good luck man.
