Advice Prior to Moving from Banking to PE

I'm leaving banking to move to PE in a few months. Looking for any advice on things I should do before a) leaving banking and b) starting in PE. I'm planning to have catch ups with my MDs to find out future deal flow that matches my firm's criteria as well as find out which subsectors they think are good areas to invest in or generally investigate. I'll also be taking time off prior to starting in PE as a way to reset. Open to any other suggestions

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some detailed suggestions for transitioning from banking to private equity (PE):

Before Leaving Banking:

  1. Develop Strong Relationships with Senior Bankers:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior bankers, particularly Managing Directors (MDs). They can be valuable references during your PE recruiting process.
    • Ensure you have a "warm" reference from your MD, as a lukewarm reference can be detrimental.
  2. Gather Insights on Deal Flow and Subsector Trends:

    • Have catch-ups with your MDs to understand future deal flow that aligns with your PE firm's criteria.
    • Seek their opinions on promising subsectors and areas worth investigating.
  3. Network with PE Professionals:

    • Start networking with headhunters and PE professionals early. Reach out to people in the industry and ask for introductions to others in PE for advice and insights.
  4. Prepare Your Resume and Application Materials:

    • Update your resume to highlight relevant banking experience and skills that are transferable to PE.
    • Consider using templates and guides available on WSO, such as the Private Equity Resume Template.

Before Starting in PE:

  1. Take Time Off to Reset:

    • Taking time off before starting your new role in PE is a good idea to reset and recharge.
  2. Research and Prepare:

    • Use resources like CapIQ to screen for PE firms and understand the landscape.
    • Draft a template email for cold emailing people at funds to introduce yourself and express your interest.
  3. Understand the PE Process:

    • Familiarize yourself with the PE process, including deal sourcing, due diligence, and portfolio management.
    • Leverage WSO resources and guides to deepen your understanding of the PE industry.
  4. Seek Advice from Experienced Professionals:

    • Reach out to experienced professionals in PE for advice on transitioning and succeeding in your new role.
    • Ask questions about their experiences and any tips they have for someone new to the industry.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth transition from banking to private equity and set yourself up for success in your new role.
