AMEX Gold For PE Associate in SF
I'm going to be starting as an associate at a large cap PE fund in SF soon, and I'm debating whether it's worth opening an AMEX Gold. My fund issues a corporate card that will reduce the annual fee, and I can rack up points from UberEats ordered to the office. However, I'm concerned that I won't be able to use some of the credits well (Dunkin, Resy, etc) in SF. I'm also looking at the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture X as additional options. I'm currently using simple cash back cards so I'm fairly new to the points game. Would love to hear any thoughts!
You can afford a $300/yr credit card without thinking if you are working in large cap PE boss.
and the points will pay for itself quickly if you eat out a lot and buy groceries.
i am both gold and platinum
That definitely makes sense, I think the main concern I have isn't so much the annual fee but rather if the Chase / Capital One ecosystems might be better specifically for SF, e.g. if I'll be mostly flying out of SFO (United hub) for personal travel or if the Dunkin / Resy credits are hard to use for Amex. I'm already leaning towards the Amex Gold anyways though.
if it’s the corporate AMEX gold, I believe you only earn 1x on everything (so no 3x dining); when I joined the other associates and I were debating about upgrading as well but ultimately decided not to because of that.
Now, if your firm allows you to expense on your personal card and reimburse which some do, that’s goated.
I think you might be referring to a different card (apologies if I'm mistaken), I'm asking about the regular personal Gold card - it seems like historically there was a reduced annual fee for it if you also held a corporate Amex but I heard it's going away.
gotcha yea my mistake, i was referring to the corporate gold amex
You might as well go for it. The closest thing you’ll probably see to gold in your life (as a PE associate) is an Amex card.
Choose the platinum and use it for everything. It’s more expensive and not nearly as good as the gold for daily driving but makes up for it with an increased clout buff around women.
If you’re on a date and paying with the gold, you might as well be staring at the bill before handing it back.
Life is about much more than just maximizing credit card points Mr. MF PE
If you need a credit card to impress women you’re ngmi
stop being a retard, you're not getting poon because of a marginally better credit card
Most guys I’ve gone on a date with had both gold and platinum and just put gold down when we went for dinners and plat when we traveled
Venture x basically pays for itself via the $300 statement credit and $100 worth of points. Just have to take 1 trip per year and you’re in the green. The lounges are pretty great and the portal for booking travel has surprisingly good rates on rental cars / hotels and is basically the same as market prices on flights.
If you’re going to use it, why not?
This isn’t a big life decision.
