Anyone have any insight into The Courtney Group in LA?
They are an boutique IB/PE, have seen them listed on WSO, but haven't seen anyone make any comments about how they work.
Anybody know of someone who has worked there, are they reputable, or if how they pay? Even in general, how do smaller PE firms typically pay on the West Coast?
Hi bcrew13, any of these topics helpful:
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
My team almost co-invested alongside them in a transaction. Ultimately didn't get there on the deal just because we were tied up with other direct investments at the time and couldn't dedicate the resources to it. From my interaction with Tom, he seemed like a sharp guy who'd clearly had some wins in his portfolio. Deal was well thought through and they had a strategic plan in place for growth to execute immediately after acquisition, and had brought in some great industry partners.
I can't directly speak to comp. A couple things to note though. They run an independent sponsor model - in that they get funding for transactions on a deal by deal basis, and take a transaction fee and carry for each deal. They'll likely charge the companies in their portfolio a management fee, but not charge an asset management fee to the entities that invest in each deal. On one hand, that might mean that cash comp is lower (not really sure), just because there is no standard fee being charged on AUM. However, the good thing for comp there is that technically carry is not cross-collateralized against other deals, so in theory you can have less risk against your upside. Th=e downside of that is you're always raising capital.
Don't know anything about their banking operation.
