Apollo Strategic Finance - interview soon!

Hi everyone,

So I have an interview coming up tomorrow with Apollo's strategic finance team at the associate level, based in NYC. Any tips on how to prepare/what to expect? Background includes CRE acquisitions/portfolio management and PE FP&A, where I currently am. Obviously this isn't for an investing seat but curious to know if the process will be drastically different from their traditional PE/PC roles. To my understanding from the job posting, it seems to be an FP&A type role, but would love any additional insights into the team if anyone has any (job posting below). Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know to prepare for your interview with Apollo's Strategic Finance team:

  1. Interview Structure:

    • Apollo interviews are known for being rigorous, even for non-investing roles. Expect a mix of technical and behavioral questions.
    • For similar roles, candidates have reported back-to-back interviews, often with a heavy focus on technical skills and problem-solving.
  2. Technical Preparation:

    • Brush up on basic accounting, FP&A concepts, and corporate finance fundamentals. Since your background includes PE FP&A, you should be familiar with forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, which are likely to come up.
    • Be ready for mental math and potentially some brain teasers. Apollo has a reputation for testing candidates' quick thinking and analytical skills.
    • Review transaction comps and DCF basics, as these are often staples in Apollo interviews, even for non-investing roles.
  3. Role-Specific Insights:

    • Since this is a Strategic Finance role, the focus will likely be on portfolio company performance, financial planning, and strategic decision-making rather than deal execution.
    • Your experience in CRE acquisitions and portfolio management could be a strong talking point. Be prepared to discuss how you’ve used financial analysis to drive strategic decisions in your current and past roles.
  4. Behavioral Questions:

    • Apollo values candidates who can handle high-pressure environments. Be ready to discuss examples of how you’ve managed tight deadlines, complex projects, or challenging stakeholders.
    • Highlight your ability to work cross-functionally, as Strategic Finance roles often require collaboration with various teams.
  5. Case Studies or Hypotheticals:

    • There’s a chance you might be given a mini-case or hypothetical scenario. For example, one candidate was asked to analyze a situation involving revenue impacts for an NFL stadium. Be prepared to think on your feet and structure your answers logically.
  6. Cultural Fit:

    • Apollo is known for its demanding culture. Show that you’re not only technically capable but also resilient and adaptable.

Good luck with your interview! If you need additional prep resources, consider reviewing FP&A-focused materials or brushing up on technical guides like those available on WSO.
