Australia vs London: Comp and Opportunities

Hi,

Just wanted to hear people's thoughts on the PE landscape, in particular wrt compensation levels and number of opportunities (and/or anything else of interest), in Australia compared to London.

I have been working in PE in London but am considering a move to Australia in the medium term future.

You’ll still be stuck infront of your screen so not sure about the extent of that advantage

There really is a huge trend of Brits moving to Aus over the past 6 months eh, London truly is fucked.

On the topic, friend of mine went out there and did MM M&A for a couple years before trying to transition to PE. View was that the landscape is much smaller, more fragmented and less opportunity. PE largely hires Aussies given the visa restrictions but that said it is still doable. Best way is to get sponsorship via bank and then make the move once you're across the pond, albeit slim pickings once you're there.

From someone who works a lot with sponsors domestically, your best shot at working in PE in aus is likely an internal transfer at your shop/a global shop, or being one of the remarkable few who make it through. Almost every person i work with locally is either an Aussie, HBS grad or had lateraled with a bank, gotten a visa and then transferred. There are very few brits in the local industry, with the overwhelming majority of the expats being senior-level Americans sent down from the mothership.

the difficulty in getting bid is not necessarily a function of the calibre required to work in the domestic landscape, but more or less due to scarcity. it’s a small market

I moved from Aus to London very early in my career. So I don't have specific advice to you, but more generally the finance industry. It is extremely small in Aus. And the number of high paying front office roles is proportionally very small. PE in particular is microscopic. I was at a roadshow event in Melbourne from BGH shortly after they were founded, and it is a smaaaaall firm and a very small industry. In saying all of that - if you do get a well-paying front office job, the quality of life in Aus is really nice.

I moved to London specifically because of the much larger market giving far more opportunities to specialise and lean in to career development. I think for the first 5 years or so of a career, pay is quite similar between Aus and London front office, but once you get mid level and beyond my impression is London pulls ahead.

are there many other fellow aus people in london working in finance? do you plan on returning back to aus?

Seems like the pessimism mostly relates to the visa situation - which I personally would have covered (since my wife is Australian).

Other than that, I would suppose that it is quite well looked upon having been in the PE sphere in London? I guess the market is quite local of course, and compared to Aussies, I would not know the different companies in the various sectors etc.

Do you know who the best recruiters are for the Australian PE shops?
