Being on really good MM deals. Question
I work at a reputable MM shop. I’m staffed on a deal that’s going to sell for a few billions. It’s a really good company.
Does this affect my chances at potentially landing at a better fund? Maybe even a MF group?
Could this be leveraged into a solid EB/BB lateral role?
I wouldn’t think either of these are impossible to start with, but wondering if being on this deal helps my chances. Thanks all.
Being involved in a high-quality MM deal, especially one valued in the billions, can absolutely enhance your chances of landing at a better fund or even transitioning to a MF group. Here's why:
Deal Size and Quality: While MM deals are typically smaller, a multi-billion-dollar transaction stands out. It demonstrates your ability to work on complex, high-profile deals, which is attractive to both MF groups and top-tier EBs/BBs.
Skillset Demonstration: Successfully executing a deal of this magnitude showcases your technical skills, ability to manage intricate processes, and exposure to significant client interactions. These are transferable and highly valued in larger platforms.
Storytelling for Recruiting: When interviewing for lateral roles or MF positions, this deal can serve as a strong talking point. Highlighting your contributions, the challenges faced, and the ultimate success of the transaction can make you stand out.
Networking Opportunities: Deals of this size often involve collaboration with other banks, funds, or advisors. Use this as an opportunity to network and build relationships that could open doors to future roles.
Perception Shift: Being part of a reputable MM shop with exposure to a large-scale deal can help dispel any preconceived notions about MM banks being less competitive. It positions you as someone capable of handling larger, more complex transactions.
To maximize this opportunity: - Ensure you have a clear understanding of every aspect of the deal and your role in it. - Be prepared to articulate your contributions and the deal's significance during interviews. - Leverage the deal to network with professionals at EBs, BBs, or MFs who might value your experience.
While this deal alone won't guarantee a move to a MF or top-tier bank, it certainly strengthens your profile and makes you a more competitive candidate.

Sure, if the deal gets closed/announced it would be a smart to put it front and center on your resume as the first deal under your "Select Transaction Experience"
Do I think it will help you standout against other MM IB analysts interviewing for MM PE? Yes for sure, especially if that deal is in the PE firm's sectors of focus.
Do I think it will all of a sudden make a MF/UMM PE that historically didn't hire from MM IB / targets EB & BB look at you now (you can tell based on their past hires)? My guess would be not likely
Thanks for responding man. What if this company wound up going to one of those aforementioned MFs? Would there be a case where I become somewhat familiar with them through diligence, and can somehow leverage that?
Sure, in that case I would definitely "shoot my shot" and get in touch with their headhunter if you haven't already. I would also reach out directly to the VP (or Associate) at the MF that you worked across the table from and express interest (ideally after deal closes). I did this with a few PE firms I worked across the table from when I was an IB analyst (they were all MM PE though).
Outside of this MF "A" you directly worked with, not sure it would really make you stand out with MF "B", MF "C", etc. but that's just my guess.
