Best areas to live near Marylebone?
I will be joining a PE firm located in Northern Marylebone and need to find a good area to stay. My budget is £1500 per month and I'm willing to commute up to 20 minutes. I don't wanna share with anyone and it's important that the neighbourhood is safe. Would be very thankful for any recommendations.
No neighbourhood is really "safe" in London, you should always keep your wits about you. But, it's hard to pick a relatively bad neighbourhood in central/west London. I can't think of any areas to avoid except maybe Camden and some areas of Kensington. St Johns Wood to the west is nice but sleepy. Kings Cross to the east is up and coming, maybe slightly less safe. Could even go as far down as Waterloo area which is a mixed bag but feels fine.
The constraint is your budget, since to live by yourself in the truly nice areas in anything more than a shoebox studio is gonna cost more than £1500 a month - upping your budget to like 1750 here would go a long way.
Zoopla has a travel time search (Google it since hard to find on website) which is useful. You can put in the exact location of whatever you want and then it will give you all homes with 15/30 mins of it by public transport.
Will be tough to find a one-bed for £1500 in or around Marylebone.
But look up a bit further up in north london at areas like Wembley, Kilburn and Harrow all within 15-20 mins tube ride away have some decent apartments within your budget.
Try near Finchley Road / West Hampstead.
I would look for somewhere on the Jubilee line with this budget (e.g. St. John's Wood, Swiss Cottage) if you want to stay within 20 mins commute. These places tend to be a bit sleepier, but affordable and not far from the action.
Alternatively you could look somewhere just south of the river (e.g. Vauxhall, Borough) to stay within the £1.5k budget and be a bit closer to central, but commute starts to get a bit longer.
St Johns Wood is the best for that type of location. I pay £1670 for a one bed where I live alone, but you should get something in your budget.
Thanks for all the recommendations so far, your replies have been incredibly helpful. What are the best websites to find housing from abroad in London? I am not situated in the UK currently so everything needs to be handled digitally.
From top of mind:
Platforms: Rightmove, Zoopla
Letting agents: Dexters, Marsh & Parsons, Knight Frank, Foxtons (although have many friends who have negative experience with them both from a letting and a property mgmt pov)
