Following - curious. Don't know any lol.
at the junior level, someone that’s not a dick and only runs at deals they actually want to do (as opposed to taking every opportunity to IC).
For a mid level professional, the only good partner is a partner no longer with your firm. Old guy planning to retire in next 1-3 years who mentors you and actively encourages you to inherit leadership of their sector coverage. Or Partner who retires or leaves firm which creates an opening for you to takeover the leadership of their sector coverage.
Strong disagree. You need Partners and Senior Partners to get stuff through IC and get your deals done. That means you’ll have to share the glory whether it’s fair or not, but shared glory is better than no glory
Second the comment above, have seen so many times Directors at my firm trying to detach themselves from their mentor partner who are only 5-10 years more senior, as they need to create their own coverage / space to get the partner promotion.
Best mentor for mid level / junior MDs is someone 10+ years more senior who will have enough gravitas such that he can create space for you / share with you some of their coverage as they progress into more management roles.
I thought this was going to name/shame, and preferably devolve into who the worst partners are.
the best ones are prob ones 1) who came from a different background, aka left the firm and rejoined, was previously in a different part of the org, as they are trying to build their own "underlyings" 2) ones who already made it to partner early but only 7-9 years older than the rest of the VP/Principals, they tend to be more helpful given they are obviously outstanding and have no threat, and younger than your typical MD in their 50s
Josh Harris is known to be a really thoughtful person and a kind mentor.
Is he that bad
