Biz Dev in PE - Advice

I am wrapping up month 6 in IB and have learned that I do not want a career in banking or on a deal team. I've zeroed in on PE BD as the path for me, as I love making relationships and genuinely enjoy talking shop. Would love to hear abt anyone's experience in BD, particularly at the junior levels.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights into Business Development (BD) roles in Private Equity (PE), particularly at the junior levels:

  1. Role and Responsibilities:

    • Developing Themes: Working closely with the investment team to develop investment themes.
    • Market Intelligence: Reading and discussing Confidential Information Memorandums (CIMs) and gathering market intelligence.
    • Deal Sourcing: Spending significant time talking with bankers to get deals into the pipeline.
    • Relationship Management: Managing relationships with lenders and other stakeholders.
    • Networking: Regularly catching up with peers to swap notes and attending conferences, events, and city visits.
  2. Advancement:

    • Firm Dependent: Advancement opportunities depend heavily on the firm, including the number of professionals above you and the firm's growth trajectory.
    • Partner/MD Level: Many lower-middle-market (LMM) and middle-market (MM) firms have Partner/Managing Director (MD) level BD professionals, which can be a long-term goal.
  3. Skills and Development:

    • Financial Modeling: Learning financial modeling to keep up with associates at the firm.
    • Education: Pursuing further education, such as a Master's or MBA, to enhance credentials.
    • Cold Emailing: Effectively using cold emails to network and seek opportunities.
  4. Lifestyle and Fit:

    • Personality Fit: The BD lifestyle can be a good fit for those who enjoy building relationships and networking.
    • Long-Term Stay: Some view BD roles as a long-term career path rather than a stepping stone to other opportunities.
  5. Career Path:

    • Switching Firms: Potential exit opportunities include switching firms or returning to banking.
    • Corporate Roles: Some BD professionals transition to high-level corporate roles or hedge funds.

Most Helpful

For junior roles it will mostly be covering the long tail of bankers / co-covering larger accounts with seniors and connecting the dots between sector investment professionals and industry bankers.

In addition to coverage you could also be managing the firm CRM to make sure all deals are accounted for, running data & analytics on monthly deal flow, and keeping track of firm & bank relationships to see who you have paid fees to and who to bring in for pitches.

You could also be doing a lot of research on thesis development & mapping out the relevant bankers for a new space depending on how the team is set up.
