Books to improve leadership (for new VP)

Newly minted PE VP here and looking for advice on leadership and management.

I’m new to managing juniors and I don’t have much experience with leading teams. Any advice or book recommendations are greatly appreciated!

On my background: I recently joined an Upper MM fund approx. 6 months ago as a VP. Prior to this, I spent 3 years as an associate/ senior associate at a US MF. I didn’t go to business school and worry that my leadership / management skills aren’t where they should be (compared to my 1st year VP peers that completed an MBA)

Can sometimes be a little rudimentary depending on who is being interviewed or what concepts are being discussed, but the Entreleadership podcast series has been really helpful for me in the past in trying to think more actively about my team's needs and the organization's needs and how to tackle leadership problems from different perspectives.

Ignore my title, here is some real tea I learned from managing teams.

You don’t become a good leader overnight and books are no substitute for experience (leadership books are fun to read though).

You need to go overboard on being a good leader before it becomes natural, here are some suggestions:

  • “Over” indexing on talking to your subordinates about career goals, life aspirations, and how to help them get there (when you help develop / go to bay for someone they will walk 1,000 miles on hot coals for you); don’t forget that as a Junior VP you are closer to an associate than MD
  • Never lose your patience, the second you hell at a subordinate in this day and age they will never truly be 100% there for you again (and you are only as good as the pillars (read: associates) that support you). In this day and age with pat-on-the-back needing millennials and gen z you cannot rule by fear anymore.
  • You need to take the time, don’t just explain something once, explain it as many times as needed and go out of your ways to create examples of explanations (not just voice overs)

as you do all these things you will see what gets people going and what tactics you can use to really teach and Inspire. Doing these effectively is what gets people to bend over backwards to see you succeed. I’ll never forget after my first job a subordinate wrote me a thank you card that said how they really appreciated that I took the time to be as invested in their career as I was in mine, even after our mutual staffing ended. What was funny was when I was telling my MD about this card, they said “oh yeah we know, everyone who has worked for you has raved about how they plugged into overdrive to make sure things got done right and how energizing it was”

im sure you will pick up the air traffic control elements of leadership just fine but do what I outlined, give it real energy, and you will do VERY well
