Breaking into PE BD Role with Sales Background

I have a buddy who works in sales and is a top performer. Very good interpersonal skills, networker, looks the start, etc. Solid but not incredible technical skills.

He doesn't really have an M&A background, but is interested in the BD role given it is more relationship oriented. He's working hard to get "dangerous enough" on PE, deals, M&A, modelling, etc.

Do you guys think someone like this could break in at a LMM fund? Curious thoughts here. Expecting two types of responses:

  • No way, even BD people need to know M&A
  • Sales and soft skills are all that matter in the BD role
