Breaking into PE from Business Operations / Corporate Strategy

Hello,

Looking to get some insight into possible entry paths to PE from a Business Operations / Corporate Strategy role. I am looking to transition into PE and was planning on pivoting to consulting first as the traditional IB route seems unlikely from my current position/age, but have seen some articles and discussions on direct Operations to PE transitions and would obviously prefer the more direct route. If anyone has any insight on steps or best routes from ops into PE, and what types of roles I should target it would be greatly appreciated.

Educational background: BS in Management Science / Operations Research with a MS in Finance. Considering/open to MBA.

Professional background: I am currently a Senior Program Manager at a IT firm with 6 YOE. My role has been primarily direct operations, and currently managing mid 8 figures in annual revenue. I have been offered a choice for my next role that would either have me continue on the direct side running a Business Unit with low 9 figures in annual revenue, or to transition to Business Operations / Corporate Strategy full time at a Director level with VP in reach within a few years.

Is the transition from Business Operations at my level to PE viable, or should I consider another path? If it is viable, what is the level of senior management that would typically get brought over to a PE firm? I have the opportunity to define my next role at my current firm to pretty much anything I want it to be, so if there is an optimal role/title I should shoot for any insight would be appreciated.

Any insight or advice would be highly appreciated.
