BX / KKR / Apollo process - what are they doing?

Had my interviews on September 15th with 2 associates, 1 principal and the head of the group and they said they can have an answer as soon as the weekend and my interviews went really well...

On Monday, I got a call that despite my interviews going well they want to run a structured process and will get back later (with a technical test apparently)

I followed up twice last week and once this week and still nothing. What the hell is going on? Am I following up too much or too little? What's happening behind the scenes?

I'm in a niche area so I have one other interview process but it's hard to have a lot since theres so few companies in this area.

Only solution seems to be to get a competing offer to speed this up.

Just FYI, when they want you, they don’t let you ‘leave the building’ without an offer in hand. So you’re clearly not a slam dunk, which is what they want. They only want to hire people they feel like they “must have”.

Based on the fact pattern you’re describing, you’re not a must have. The question isn’t what’s wrong with BX Apollo KKR, the question is what’s wrong with you (ie your interviewing delivery) where you’re being viewed as a B+ candidate.
