Can someone please help me understand the PE fundraising process?

I understand that PE firms raise money from institutional investors (pension funds, asset managers, HNW clients, sovereign wealth fund etc..) But I am having trouble understanding the timing? After a fund is raised and investment activity has begun can more investors join the fund? How do clients get paid back? Is that when the fund closes?

Thanks you, I am trying to learn more about PE fundraising.
