Can you really not lateral as an IB Associate

Currently a PE associate thinking about going back to banking for that much higher cash comp...

Could I go back as an IB associate and then recruit back into PE to get that sweet carry as a Senior Associate/VP?

You can 100p go back into banking at any time, but the door gets very narrow to head back into PE once you hit VP, and it will likely be LMM so taking a haircut on comp there

Based on how BBs are talking about their IB pipelines/forecasts I don't think you'll be seeing the crazy IB numbers from last year in the next few years. If you're solely looking for comp I'd hang out in PE at least until this market weirdness/recession/whatever your word of choice is... at least your returns are on a much longer cycle
