Career advice - PE to LP

I'm with a smallcap/midcap shop, but my goal is to work for an LP (on the manager selection side). Think SWFs, Pension Funds, family offices/trusts/endowments.

The firm I'm with has solid LPs and a good market rep, so it's a great stepping stone for connects.

But I hear earlier is better when it comes to switching to the other side. So I'm looking for advice on how to go about laying the foundation for the switch, things I can do apart from directly applying (which I will). Is there a particular set of criteria required? Or a skill set not needed by PEs but by LPs?

Thanks in advance!
