Just wanted to get some input on a career in investor relations after maybe 5-6 years on the PE side. I really think I'd be a better fit in talking to people and trying to secure commitments especially when I had significant time on the PE side as well.
How do you break in to the IR side? How does compensation compare to PE? Is it a pretty competitive space? Any input would be appreciated - don't really know much about it
Know a person my age at MF IR and apparently they make significantly more than me. They did 2-3 years at a mid-tier BB before making the switch.
I've heard that direct PE investment experience is appreciated as it increases your pedigree and allows you to speak re. deal terms with more confidence (rather than just fully being a conduit between your own deal team and that of outside investors)
The advice given to me was to stay as long as possible in direct investing before making the transition to IR. Probably easiest / most-aligned to transfer at your own firm while maintaining title.
Sounds like you already know most of this. I'd be interested in additional info here as well.
Effectively you are a salesman therefore i would say 70-80% of the compensation is commission based at least at my firm. Those that can make sales earn a LOT, if you are unable to bring funds in you get fired. After a few years of building a client base with proved fund track record its a very easy cushy job. Until then I can imagine it can be quite stressful.
Thoughts on starting a career in this group with no prior investment or sell-side experience? Currently interviewing for a new sales assistant position for a growing platform at a PE firm (think TPG, KKR, Carlyle, Blackstone, etc.) and wondering if my exit opps will mostly look like laterals/if this is a bad thing or moreso a good entry point.

As far as I know, it reports either directly or on a dotted line to the COO and supports the IRP's in the group. Lots of CRM functionality (salesforce etc.) as well as market research/reporting, prospecting and participating in investor meetings/events. Hope that helps.
