Consulting to PE or MBA
I’m currently at a top consulting firm and have specialised exclusively in due diligence work. I am one year into the role and am already in touch with recruiters for PE roles.
However, I really want to do an MBA as well, so my main question is: which should I do first? My ultimate aim is to land at a UMM/MF.
If I do an MBA now, I have the option to receive sponsorship from my current company, which obviously isn't a guarantee if I jump to a PE fund first. I do have some internship experience on the buy side already, but my biggest concern is whether getting an MBA without full-time PE experience limits my opportunities of going straight into PE (specifically UMM/MF) after the MBA.
Also, for context if useful, my GMAT is already out of the way but expires in late 2029.
Absolutely do PE first and MBA later (from someone who messed this up and faced an uphill battle to get into the industry). PE first is the most common path by 10x, based on recruiting timelines and industry norms.
Why even bother getting an MBA when you’re already in? To get more senior roles?
As the other poster said, go to PE first. Honestly if you like PE and can find an opportunity to progress (either at your first firm or a post associate stint lateral), I wouldn't do the MBA - it's gotten increasingly hard to get back in through that path and I don't see that changing over the coming years
