Denver native looking to move back, thoughts on Denver PE scene?
Denver native looking to move to be close to family. How is the PE scene (comp/hours/dealflow)? I see that the Celtics owner's family office is invested in a firm called Copley Equity Partners. II'mm also curious about Platte River, KSL etc
Other firms: Revelstoke, Bow River, Crest Rock
What's the consensus on Denver in general? Should I move, or will it severely limit my options? I want to be closer to family, but not at the risk of my career potential. I'm young, so I can delay going back for a few years.
I'm considering moving there next year to be closer to mountains and music scene. Seems like a decent place for later 20s if you can look past the politics.
Would avoid Revelstoke, they tried to CV a CV (CV squared)
In addition to the names mentioned have heard of Excellere Partners - LMM / MM - biz services, healthcare, industrial growth
Surely the Partners Group CO office is a great option here? Very solid global fund and like 45 mins drive from central Denver I think? Otherwise consensus is tough outside of strong regional performers (which also would be fine but may limit location flexibility in the future).
Goes without saying. Unfortunately, I don't think they are an option for me.
KSL is a much harder seat to land vs partners group
ik Platte River and Bow River are currently growing at the Asso/SA level and anecdotally have heard both are nice shops.
They are both very average and underpay.
Welcome to the Denver finance scene, where underpayed and average experience are the norm
Crest Rock has the best returns of the bunch.
Are they really? I talked to them about a role last year and was unsure...
Mountaingate, bow river, KSL are top three. Platte river also very strong but stick to what they know
Isn't Rubicon there. Small though and meh
I’m getting the feeling that moving to Denver = Career death
It’s just not a city that attracts go-getters or career minded people. Partners Group and KSL are really the only legitimate “career-focused” PE firms there where your career actually benefits from physically being in Denver. Mountaingate, platte river, bow river, crest rock, even I would argue Revelstoke and the rest of the random MMs out there are all very middling / average investors and places to build a career in PE.
It's better for startups (ranks 6-7 on VC capital invested) and random industries such as mining, space, defense, and some hardware/hardtech. Palantir is HQd there along with Foundry (Brad Feld). Just not really a massive PE scene and the majority of people don't move there for career purposes lol.
