doubt regarding pe

hello everyone, forgive me if im being stupid but afaik theres mainly 2 types of jobs that pe firms recruit from:

ibd and consulting(ibd obviously being a lot better), i think sometime back i saw someone write a comment that consultants work in the operational side of business,if that is true could someone please provide more information on this?im just confused,do consultants do different work than the people who come in from ibd,if so what do they do, any help would be appreciated,im sorry if what i wrote dosent happen and both consultants and bankers do the same job in pe,was just curious

thanks in advance
