Energy PE internship --> IB recruiting in different city

I received an internship  for an energy PE firm for 2024 summer (sophomore), but I don't want to pigeonhole myself into the energy sector  since I'm not sure I want that as a career.  The company has a deadline for me to sign the offer next week, so I'm not sure if I should  go with this opportunity or re-recruit for a  sophomore year internship.  Pros for looking for more opportunities is definitely more generalist internships, but cons is the uncertainty and more time wasted on sophomore year recruiting when I want to focus on junior year internships.   Will an energy PE internship look weird if I apply for junior year internships next year  in another city that I am going to school in?  Any advice on if I should try for other opportunities?

You're not at all pigeonholing yourself as a sophomore. It's hard enough to get PE experience that early, take it and have an answer for why you don't want to do energy but you're right to start focusing on junior year. The people interviewing you know it's hard to find something for sophomore year and won't hold that against you
