Energy to Tech Recruiting

Incoming analyst at EB (JEF/MOE/PJT) - wanting to switch from energy to tech. Will have little to no tech exposure in my industry group of O&G banking. Want to go to tech PE and would like to know if it’s easier to internally switch groups to tech banking and then recruit for PE (after a year or two in tech) or is it possible to exit into tech?

Will be pretty difficult to go to tech PE from Energy IB - You'll take a big step down if you can find a position at all (likely some no-name LMM shop that isn't a good exit).

Path of least resistance will be to go to Tech IB and then go to Tech PE from there. Going internally at MOE / PJT to the tech group will be great and most people know that folks coming out of JEF Energy are workhorses and respect the grind in the group to the point that you'll be a top candidate for lateral IB opportunities. You'll likely be behind the overall timeline by a year - seeing that internal transfers dont happen till a year in but 1 year in a 30 year career isn't a big deal and banks want lateral hires that have at least a year of experience.

I work at one of the groups you mentioned and I don't think I saw even one tech PE opportunity hit my inbox - granted I focused my recruiting on Energy / Infra opps but based on my friends' experiences as well - Energy IB to Tech PE ain't happening.

Thank you for the input. Will definitely look at lateraling/transferring internally.
