Family Office - Pay and do you negotiate carry?

Will be working with the principal directly. I don't think he's willing to pay market cash comp for my level, but am also expecting better WLB.

The other thing that attracts me is that he has a pretty good investment track record. However, unlike a fund, there's no exit horizon, and there's no way to really calculate carry.

I'm wondering how much of each investment I should propose as carry. Additionally, I gather that in funds, your carry vests over a period - should I also then ask that the stake I ask for gets vested over 5 years?

Finally - principal does more angel / venture type investments, if that changes anything

TIA
