From BB Finance to PE

I'm trying to move from finance at a BB bank where I've been for 7 years (between 2 banks) as well as having my MBA. I've been exposed to a number of products and worked with trading desks (think product control + reporting/planning/analysis) and I'm trying to move to a PE shop. I find that world way more interesting and believe there are alot better career paths/prospects from there.

Any advice on going from sell side to PE in a finance/operations type role. I am pretty open and even willing to make a lateral move to get where I want to be... any advice? Places to look?

Much appreciated

I really think you missed your window and your only chance at this point is through networking and luck. Even guys with solid pre-MBA PE experience find the road back to PE to be incredibly competitive so it will be an uphill battle. You can reach out to some of the big PE recruiters (Oxbridge, SG Partners, CPI, etc.) but I am not sure that you will get much traction. What about PE interests you? What current skill set do you have that you believe is transferable to PE? What is your story? Just some things that you will want to think about before you meet with a recruiter. Do not want to discourage you but do want you to proceed with realistic expectations. Good luck.

All good my man, appreciate the honest feedback, thats why I'm here (and posted). First and foremost I am looking to get on the buy side be it with a HF, FoF, AM, or PE. Of those I find PE the most interesting - debt financing, investments in companies and potential take over, interacting with clients,etc... Not to mention better earnings potential. I have reached out to my network to see about getting any traction but not much was there - I was close at a midsize but growing PE shop for a reporting/middle office type role but after making it to final rounds, they went with someone who had some PE experience. I've met with recruiters already, have my story in line, but they mostly want to just place you and get paid, so they say "it could be tough to get to the buy side, maybe you should check out [similar role to my current role just at another bank]. I'm at the point where I have to make a move to where I can see my career continuing to grow where as right now I feel plateu'd a bit and want more exposure to more of the deal side of things, even if in a BO/MO function (for now)

@junkbondswap I think the OP was referring to working in a finance support function for a private equity firm rather than as an investment professional, unless I read incorrectly. If that is the case, then he hasn't missed the boat as firms look to fill those types of positions on a rolling basis. OP - if you were to move into a finance role at a PE / HF you could potentially earn a better income (though there are a great deal of variables to this). The variance in pay scale is most pronounced early on in the career unless you are able to transition to a Director of Finance type of role that exists as a CFO succession position.
