Genstar has fantastic returns/people but would go with Apax here especially if you're pre-MBA. Nobody in the industry would look down at Genstar, but Apax is at a different level despite similar fund sizes.
if you're going to tout your firm so much with blank statements of "Apax is literally so good you need to take it" please at least provide some context / rationale why. Genstar is a top-tier fund with great returns & culture, so do please elaborate why the answer is so clear to you
Not my firm, but have multiple friends at each. Would probably even pick genstar post-mba if I had ties to SF.
Even said the people were fantastic - may have to rethink that statement if they're hiring dolts like you.
Go with Genstar, way better returns than Apax and you will learn a lot since they have a lean team.
Go with your desired location (Genstar - SF / Apax - NYC). Both are great firms and the last few vintages have produced good / great returns.
bumping this question - would love to get some thoughts on this ... seems like Genstar is highly underrated, huge aum, and crazy lean...

Apax. It's a megafund, NYC, more respected in the industry, better business school opportunities, history, pedigree, global reach.
Always helps to have the MF logo on your resume.
And yet Genstar’s fund is bigger than Apax hahah
Bigger fund but still pureplay MM
Pretty surprised by the contention here. I don't really see the case for Genstar over any MF.
Lol since when did apax become a MF?
Agreed never viewed them as a MF player
Since the 2000s.
apax has never been a megafund
Thought it was

Agree with the comments above -
Pros of Apax: larger, more established, more “prestigious”
Pros of Genstar: up-and-coming, lean but anecdotally better culture, probably better returns
Would go Apax but Genstar is obviously a super solid option
Tks intern
1st year associate who never changed my title
Do you want to be in SF or NY?
This is like deciding between a 7 series or S Class. Both great cars, but not a Ferrari. One is red one is blue. Are you really coming to WSO to ask prestige whores which car is more likely to get you laid?
jfc.
I don’t care about location tbh

I understand Genstar has seen a lot of success in recent years but Apax still seems like the straightforward choice here, assuming you get into an industry group you want. I would be surprised to learn if more than 10% of candidates with both offers would choose Genstar.
True
Why would you say less then 10 percent? Genstarb is gonna raise a bigger fund and is more lean
